Martin M. Mintz, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Providing psychoanalytic psychotherapy to individuals, families and couples in the White Plains/Westchester and Connecticut communities for over thirty years.

My early focus was in the treatment of children using “play therapy” as the primary modality. As time passed, I began engaging more with parents as well and found that the positive effects of combined treatment were profound. In time, this evolving method led me to working both with individuals and families units of all ages and sizes, especially during periods of crisis. The family members need to utilize their combined strength for problem solving, as well as identifying counterproductive patterns that require change. In the Chinese language, the two combined symbols that stand for the word “crisis” is both “danger“ and “opportunity”.
Every crisis threatens the stability of the family system and even more important, provides the “opportunity” for integrating new and better methods of dealing with life’s challenges. My training in both Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and Family Systems Theory gives me a depth of understanding behavior that is invaluable in intervening during a crisis and affecting change, yielding excellent results even with “short term” treatment.

My work is not symptom focused. I recognize the impact of the pain of anxiety, depression, disorganized thinking, poor emotional control, anger management or the addictions.

However, my overarching goal in psychotherapeutic treatment is to identify the self-defeating patterns in an individual or a family system, that interfere with positive growth and help the individual achieve a better capacity to maintain emotional closeness and create a more fertile soil for self-actualized personal growth. I view the symptoms noted above as significant obstacles in this path and as such, need to be addressed and ameliorated.
